This is my third time running Wilmslow half marathon, the race is always well organised and always a toughie but well worth adding to your racing calendar.
It was my second half marathon in 8 days. A lot of people told me doing two half marathons on consecutive weekends was bad planning and a bad idea. Guess what they were wrong! Strong words I know, my theory was I will have done the distance the week before so my legs, heart and lungs (and stomach) would be used to the distance, I can do a couple of recovery runs during the week and be ready to race again the following sunday. Everyone disagreed, telling me “oh you’ll be tired” “you won’t be able to push as hard the second weekend” “thats really bad planning”. I know my body and I knew what I was doing. I proved them all wrong by running Wilmslow 2mins 17seconds quicker than Reading the week before. Both are hilly tough courses, weather conditions were the same, I struggled at 8 miles on both but I was quicker on the second half marathon than the first. Moral of the story, I know myself better than anyone else, I thought I could, so I did.
Im not one for ignoring advice when it comes from educated sources but I am also educated in this area, fitness, training, programming, rehabilitation and recovery are my job after all. So, Im not saying ignore advice, Im just saying remember to listen to your own body too.
